I cannot recommend Spence Clarke highly enough! They may appear to cost more than others, but the quality of their work and the personalized care they offer makes their service a bargain – tax rebates appear, costs decrease, and stress reduces. Highly recommended!
What sets Spence Clarke apart is their ability to take complex situations — like the embargoes and financial complications we faced (caused by a cheaper firm!) —and simplify them into clear, actionable steps. Martina and Alicia walked me through everything in plain English, ensuring I fully understood each aspect of the process. No question was too small or too complicated; they patiently explained every detail until I felt confident moving forward.
Thanks to their meticulous attention to detail and strategic advice, what initially felt like an overwhelming situation slowly but surely transformed into a smooth and well-managed process. They not only resolved the immediate issues but also provided guidance to prevent future complications.
Another thing I greatly appreciated was the transparency about pricing. They were very clear about what their fees included and outlined any potential extras upfront, so there were no surprises. This level of honesty and clarity made it easy to trust them and focus on the steps and decisions I needed to take.
If you're looking for a business accounting team who delivers exceptional service, clear communication, and peace of mind I can’t recommend Martina and Alicia at Spence Clarke highly enough.
I have been using Spence Clarke for 2 years now and the service is very good - I only wish they would offer a UK tax return service also as it would make my life easier having all tax affairs with one accountant rather than two.
After various bad experiences with other accountants, we decided to move to Spence Clarke and it is the best business decision we've made!! Dario is fantastic and so helpful in explaining the complex tax and accounting systems in Spain. He's become an essential piece of our small business!
Very pleased with the services that Spence Clarke offer. Thanks to Claudia and Madeleine for their professionalism and their patience replying to any questions I may have and always in a friendly manner. Highly recommended !
We switched to Spence Clarke on recommendation. We had an initial zoom meeting with Claudia and we discussed our finances in detail. Claudia answered all our questions and explained the Spanish Tax system simply. We have lived in Spain for 15 years and wish we had known about Claudia and her team then. When it claim to filing our tax declarations we received detailed instructions which made it simple for us. We returned the information and Madeleine called us to confirm everything and explain the next step etc. Everything went smoothly and Claudia emailed us back our tax declarations to review. These were then filed and tax declaration completed and filed by mid April. Thank you Spence Clarke a very professional and efficient service and very knowledgable personnel who really know what the tax system.
Unquestionably the most professional accountants on the coast. I speak from 10 years experience with them handling all my business on both my companies. Prompt, efficient and with a friendly manner. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I have been assisted by Spence Clarke in tax affairs for over 12 years now. They are very professional and also imaginative in terms of formulating solutions and future planning, while always adhering to the law. Alistair Spence Clarke has done a great job setting up this practice and has some very able staff working for him. Notable in my case is Miguel Ángel Blanca, senior tax manager, whose knowledge of Spanish tax codes is encyclopaedic. I recommend this firm to anyone needing tax advice --- and have already sent several new and happy clients to them
Spence Clarke & Co are the most experienced team of advisors on the coast. It has always been a pleasure to work with them, their professionalism is second to none. Highly recommended to anyone looking for tax and financial advice.
Quite frankly top class. Their knowledge to the particular issues that face UK expats living in Spain is second to none and more importantly, they have a team of caring, quality, friendly people. I have no hesitation in working with them and referring clients to them.
After many years of using Spence Clarke for my personal tax affairs and recommending quite a few friends and clients I can say without doubt SC offer the best advice on the coast for anyone looking to live or work here in Spain. The whole team are totally professional and dedicated to their work and I am sure have saved me many of the headaches and worries one hears about living as an expat in Spain!
Anyone looking for good professional accounting and Tax advice should seek their help and if new to the coast they should be the first point of call!
I was an autonomo with no experience or understanding of the Spanish tax system for many years. I personally found SCC very helpful and professional. Their knowledge of every aspect of the Spanish tax and dealing with expats is one of the best I have come across. Highly recommended.
A shambles. Completely let me down after very charmingly promising the world at a time when I needed a decent and reliable accountant, that is, in the middle of my husband having an organ transplant - in fact after weeks of demanding all sorts of paperwork the boss finally told me in a bizarre and unprofessionally emotional email they were not doing my accounts anymore, saying I had "crossed a line" - I had asked what the status of the work was, which of course is normal if the person has done any work - but he did manage to make me feel it was my fault he had had to fire people and everything was a mess their end, and his phone was out of battery, and he was travelling, blah blah. After a month, nothing had actually been done despite me handholding about six junior staff through my accounts, and having to point out how an Excel workbook works to the owner of the company because he didn't understand tabs, and explaining what PayPal is to four others. Ultimately, I had had to do so much of the work myself in many different formats because none of them could work it out, that I filed on my own in an hour in the end. They made so much work for me I would have been better off never hiring them. The worst part was I hired them based on an analysis they said was made, that two of my quarters by another accountant were incorrectly filed by 5,000 Euros. It turned out the quarters filed were correct to the cent, so was it a sales ploy to make me think I needed to hire them? Probably.
I have the deepest sympathy for Cate and her accounting troubles, especially given her very difficult personal circumstances. Client confidentiality rules make it impossible to respond in the public domain in the manner I would like.
However, the fact is that Spain is not the UK, nor the US, and the formalities for accounting and taxation can be deeply frustrating, confusing and time wasting. It is not always easy for the Anglo-Saxon mentality to adapt to Spain and its ways, and the learning curve is often uncomfortable. We try hard to resolve such problems by bridging the cultures as well as helping our many clients to understand their tax obligations but, despite 31 years of public practice in Spain, try as we might, there will be times when we can’t win.
I think I can say with confidence that now Cate has learnt how to deal with the tax filings herself, as well as learning how to avoid mishandling the tax office when things don’t go to plan, so her experience of Spain should improve.
Difficult as this experience has been for her, as well as for us and the two other tax advisers she has employed in the last 18 months, I am pleased that our involvement has finally given her the confidence and the knowledge to take on the Spanish system head-on, by herself.
It’s not the way I wanted our relationship to turn out but she has my very best wishes for the future. Go get ‘em Cate and don’t let them grind you down!
